How to become an Ordinary Member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA — Association Internationale des Critiques d’ Art)

To become an Ordinary Member of AICA, applicants must produce evidence of sustained activity in the visual arts, as defined in Art. 2.1 of the Statutes, over a minimum of the previous three years, in one or more of the following areas:

Press publications

Radio, TV or electronic media broadcasting

Publications on art history, aesthetics or criticism that are primarily, but not exclusively, concerned with the modern and contemporary visual arts of all cultures

Teaching of art criticism, art history, theory, aesthetics, curating, or art, at university level

Curatorial projects, including work for museums or galleries, whose principal aim is not commercial

In order to apply for Ordinary Membership of AICA, candidates must first join either a National Section or the Open Section. National Sections forward new members' application forms to the Secretary-General. The Electoral and Membership Committee will then analyse these to ensure they comply with AICA’s membership rules. Following their approval by the Electoral & Membership Committee and the Board, new members are formally presented and admitted at the General Assembly.

All information provided in the Biographical Form is confidential

However, your basic contact details, including name, surname and e-mail, will be included in the member’s only section of the Association’s website, unless you specify that any or all parts of this information should remain confidential to the members of the AICA Bureau.

Applications sent directly by individual members will not be accepted. With the exception of those submitted to the Open Section, Biographical Forms must be officially forwarded by the President of the relevant National Section.

The Biographical Form must be typewritten in one of AICA’s three official languages: English, French or Spanish. Please download the appropriate language form of the three Biographical Forms from the website.

AICA International does not accept separate CVs, bibliographies or supporting documents (with the exception of applicants to the Open Section, who are required to provide supplementary information).

The Biographical Form must provide evidence of sustained professional activity over a minimum of theprevious three years in one or more of the mentioned areas above, in the fields of art criticism (Article 2.1): fine arts, graphics, photography, installation, computer art, all forms of live art, video, film, architecture, design and all hybrid forms of contemporary art.

Please provide a complete chronological list of activities, starting with the most recent. References should follow APA style or another recognised citation style (MLA, Chicago, Harvard, etc.), and must include the number of pages, the ISSN / ISBN or DOI (for online publications), and the length of emission for Broadcast and TV.

Only include publications and activities related to visual arts and their hybrid forms. Provide as much detail as possible, as this form is the only document that will be submitted to the Electoral and Membership Committee (EMC) for final validation once your application has been approved by the National Section.

All applications must be endorsed either by the President of the relevant National Section or, in the case of applications for the Open Section, by two sponsors, who should be AICA International Board Members.
